Tips on how to split shared expenses when traveling

Doing things you love with people you love is what traveling is all about. We have created Steven to make traveling easier so you can focus on enjoying your trip and each other’s company. Here comes our pro tips:

  1. Reach out prior to the trip

Everything gets easier if you, prior to the trip, know how to run the financial stuff when traveling. Remember that a lot of expenses start to show up prior to your departure. For example, the AirBnB bill or a rental car. We strongly recommend to split all shared expenses from the first to the last.

  2. Do not expect everyone to have the same budget

When travelling with a group of friends you will most likely have pals with full bank accounts as well as friends that eat noodles some days every month. We therefore recommend checking in advance before heading to a 5 star restaurant or booking a table at a nightclub that costs more than the latest iphone.

  3. Download Steven

Obviously the single most important thing to do when traveling with friends, maybe tied with clean underwear and a toothbrush, is to download Steven. We recommend setting up a group as soon as you have nailed where to go and with whom.

  4. Always bring at least two cards

We would strongly recommend bringing at least 2 cards when traveling. Ideally from different issuers and card brands. This will let you pay even if there are technical problems or you lose one card. And depending on where you go it does not hurt to bring some cold cash. We all know the feeling of realizing that the cab from the airport is only accepting cash.

  5. Have everyone add their expenses before the party is scattered and on their way home.

We have a tendency to remember how things end, let it be a good one and have everyone sort out the financials prior to ending the trip. Steven gets you even, even friends are happy friends we believe.

  6. All friends (almost) are good hearted

In the end it is not worth fighting about a cup of coffee or getting annoyed that someone has forgotten to pay up in time, Steven got your back and will help you all get even.
